New Hampshire ID Needed for Voter Registration

Beginning September 8, 2017, when registering to vote, you are required to provide proof of identity, age, citizenship, and domicile (where you live). Proof of identity, age, citizenship and domicile can be shown by providing one or more of the below options:

  • Current driver's license or non-driver's license
  • Current passport
  • Current military photo ID
  • Naturalization papers
  • Student ID
  • Employee ID
  • Birth Certificate
  • Rental lease for a period of more than 30 days (if you live in a home leased or owned by someone else and you are not listed on a rental agreement, lease or deed you can provide a written statement from a person who is on the rental agreement, lease or deed that you do live at that address)
  • Evidence of a home purchase
  • Vehicle registration
  • Proof you enrolled your minor children in a publicly funded school which serves the town or ward where you reside
  • Tax bill
  • Utility bill
  • Bank Statement
  • Proof that you've asked the Post Office to use y our street address as your mailing address
  • Any other document that reasonably establishes your identity and local domicile

Identity, age and citizenship can be proven by affidavit if you do not have documents for these.

If you apply to register less than 30 days before or on Election Day you will have a different registration form than those who register more than 30 days before the election. This form will require you to prove the date you gained domicile in New Hampshire using one of the above forms of proof (you may prove your identity, age and citizenship by signing an affidavit, however, proof of domicile must be provided through one of the above options). If you are unable to provide the above proof you can decide to either mail or present the above proof of domicile within 10 days of the election (or 30 days in towns where the clerk's office is open less than 20 hours a week), or you can allow the election officials to investigate your domicile. If you choose to provide the documents yourself you must do so within the 10-30 day window or you may be investigated for fraud.
