League of Women Voters

Public Forum on Proposition 30

Event Date:
Wed, Sep. 19 - 7:30 pm
Location Name:
Ellen Driscoll Theatre
325 Highland Avenue
Piedmont, CA 94611
United States
Event Description:

The Piedmont chapter of the League of Women Voters will host a forum Wednesday to inform the public about how Proposition 30 could affect the future of state education.

The free event will feature presentations by Damon Smith, associate superintendent of the Alameda County Office of Education, as well as Piedmont Unified School District Superintendent Constance Hubbard, both of whom will address the current financial state of California public education and how Gov. Jerry Brown's proposed tax initiative could prevent severe midyear cuts.

Hubbard and Smith will also touch on Proposition 38, another state income tax increase aiming to raise revenue for cash-strapped school districts. This tax increase would affect all but the lowest earners and is projected to take in around $10 billion annually.

According to Hubbard, the forum's focus will stress the need to fund education rather than promoting a certain initiative.
