Find the latest state-by-state election changes due to the COVID-19 (coronavirus) pandemic. This information is updated regularly throughout the day so please check back regularly for any new information.


Virginia

ALERT: Due to COVID-19 (coronavirus) voters mailing absentee ballots for the Special Elections on March 23 do NOT need a witness, but voters will need a witness for the Special Election on March 30. However, unlike the November 2020 election, drop boxes, postage paid envelopes and an opportunity to cure ballots are not available for both Special Elections in March. For now, the witness requirement still applies to all other elections. Voters voting on Election Day should double-check their polling locations as many locations have been changed throughout Virginia, although all polling precincts will be open in the localities having the Special Elections. Past 2020 Elections

Alabama

ALERT: Due to COVID-19 (coronavirus) the Tuesday, March 31st US Senate Runoff Election has been postponed until July 14th. If you have any questions please contact your Secretary of State.

ALERT: Due to COVID-19 (coronavirus) any voter who thinks it's impossible or unreasonable to vote at their polling place for the July 14th elect are eligible to vote absentee. All voters are encouraged to access the application online, ASAP, or no later than July 9th in order to receive your ballot. All absentee ballots must be received by the Absentee Election Manager, or postmarked by July 13th in order to be counted. If you have any other questions, please contact your Absentee Election Manager's Office.

ALERT: Due to COVID-19 (coronavirus), any voter who thinks it is impossible or unreasonable to vote at their polling location in the 2020 elections due to the declared state of emergency can vote absentee. Be sure to check the box on the ballot request application that says "I have a physical illness or infirmity which prevents my attendance at the polls." You must still submit a copy of your photo ID with the application (if you are 65 years old or older with an underlying medical condition you do not need to submit your ID as long as you provide other identifying information like your driver's license number or the last four digits of your social security number). Be sure to request your absentee ballot before October 29th to ensure you can vote absentee for the November General Election. The voted absentee ballot must be witnessed by 2 people or have the seal of a notary (if you have an underlying medical condition and provide a written statement about your medical condition you do NOT need a witness or notary) and must be postmarked by the day before the election (and received by noon on Election Day) or hand delivered by 5pm on Election Day for the ballot to count. Alaska

ALERT: The April 4, 2020 Party Run Primary Election will mostly take place by mail, if you were registered before February 18th you were automatically mailed a ballot. You must postmark your ballot by March 24, 2020, or drop your ballot at a drop box location in order for your ballot to be counted. If you prefer, you may vote in person on April 4th.


Arizona

ALERT: Maricopa County Voters - polling places have recently closed due to the COVID-19 (coronavirus) response. Please check here for to find a vote center (https://recorder.maricopa.gov/pollingplace/). You may vote at any vote center in the county.


Arkansas

ALERT: Due to COVID-19 (coronavirus) all voters can vote an absentee ballot for the November General election. The last day to request your ballot varies, as does the deadline to return the voted ballot. Please see below for more information. California

ALERT: Due to COVID-19 (coronavirus), all registered voters will be mailed an absentee ballot automatically. All voters are encouraged to register to vote as soon as possible to allow for the absentee ballots to be mailed.  If you have any questions, please contact your Secretary of State.


Connecticut

ALERT: Due to COVID-19 (coronavirus) the Tuesday, April 28th election has been moved to Tuesday, August 11, 2020. If you have any questions please contact your Secretary of State.

ALERT: Due to COVID-19 (coronavirus) all voters can vote an absentee ballot for the November General election. Each town will have at least one secure drop box where voters can drop their ballots, or you can mail your ballot back to the address provided. Absentee ballots must be received by 8pm on Election Day in order to be counted. For more information on absentee voting, and other voting rules around COVID, please contact your Secretary of State.


DC

ALERT: For DC voters who requested an absentee ballot but did NOT receive one, you can use a vote by email/PDF option. You can request your PDF ballot by emailing [email protected]. Please contact the Board of Elections for more information. The curfew in place for June 2nd begins at 7pm - polls are scheduled to close at 8pm.

ALERT: Due to COVID-19 (coronavirus) all registered voters will be mailed a ballot for the November elections. Your voted and mailed ballot must be postmarked on or before Election Day, and must arrive no later than 7 days after the election to be counted.  DC is also adding additional vote centers during the voting period (October 27 - November 2) and Election Day. Please contact the DCBOE for more information about your polling locations.


Delaware

ALERT: Due to COVID-19 (coronavirus) the Presidential Primary has been moved to July 7th. The School Board elections have been moved to July 21st. All registered voters will be sent an absentee ballot application in advance of the Presidential Primary (you must be registered with a party to automatically receive this application). Or, you can apply for an absentee ballot online today. Self-quarantine or social distancing will be considered valid reasons to vote by absentee ballot, and all voters are encouraged to apply to vote absentee as soon as possible. If you have any questions, please contact your State Election Commissioner.

ALERT: Due to COVID-19 (coronavirus) all registered voters are able to vote by mail for the November 2020 election. All voters will be sent a mail-in ballot request form 60 days before the election. Everyone is encouraged to fill out the form and return it to the appropriate official in order to receive their mail-in ballot. All voted ballots must be RECEIVED by 8pm on Election Day in order to be counted. If you prefer to vote in person on Election Day you may still do so.


Florida

ALERT: Due to COVID-19 (coronavirus), several polling locations have been moved. If your assigned polling place has moved, please contact your Supervisor of Elections for information on your new location.

ALERT: Due to COVID-19 (coronavirus) all Florida voters are encouraged to request an absentee ballot for the upcoming August primary. You can request your ballot today and it will be mailed sometime between July 9-16th. If you have any additional questions please contact your Supervisor of Elections.


Georgia

Hawai'i

ALERT: Due to COVID-19 (coronavirus), the April 4, 2020 Party Run Primary Election will only take place by mail. Ballots are mailed directly to registered voters. If you are registered before April 4, 2020 you will automatically be mailed a ballot. If you have any questions, please contact your State Party.


Idaho

ALERT: Due to COVID-19 (coronavirus) the May 19th primary has been moved to a vote by mail election. All voters who wish to vote in this election must request an absentee ballot online, or by contacting your county clerk. Voters who do not request an absentee ballot will be mailed a request form, however, we strongly encourage voters to request their absentee ballot today to ensure it arrives before Election Day. Voted absentee ballots must be received by June 2nd in order to be counted. If you have any questions, please contact your Secretary of State.


Illinois

ALERT: Today is Election Day! Due to COVID-19 (coronavirus), there have been several changes to polling locations. Polling locations around the state may be relocated. If you are unsure of your polling location, please contact your Board of Elections.


Indiana

ALERT: Due to COVID-19 (coronavirus) the Tuesday, May 5th Primary election has been postponed until Tuesday, June 2. All voters are able to request an absentee ballot, no excuse required! You can request an absentee ballot here, you have until May 21st to request your ballot. All voted ballots must be received by noon on Election Day. Iowa

ALERT: Due to COVID-19 (coronavirus) the absentee voting period for the June 2nd primary has been extended. Voters can first receive their absentee ballot beginning April 23rd. All voters are encouraged to vote-by-mail to avoid crowds on Election Day, so fill out your application today! Right now polls are remaining open for in-person voting on June 2nd with curbside voting available for voters who may have difficulty entering the polling location. including everyone in the high risk categories for the virus.

Kansas

ALERT: Due to COVID-19 the May 2nd Democratic Presidential Primary will take place by mail only, there is no in-person voting. If you have any questions, please contact your State Party.


Kentucky

ALERT: Due to COVID-19 (coronavirus) the Tuesday, May 19, 2020 Primary election has been postponed until Tuesday, June 23, 2020. Every voter may request an absentee ballot for this election! You can check the "medical emergency" reason on your application and have an absentee ballot mailed to your home. All voters are encouraged to request and vote an absentee ballot from their County Clerk. If you have any additional questions please contact your Board of Elections.

Louisiana

ALERT: Due to COVID-19 (coronavirus), Louisiana has postponed the several elections. The Presidential primary (and other primary) election (previously scheduled for June 20th) will now take place on July 11th. The Municipal Elections (previously scheduled for July 25th), will now take place on August 15th. Early voting will continue for these elections if you are unable to vote on Election Day. ALERT: Due to COVID-19 (coronavirus), early voting for the Saturday, July 11th Primary Election has been extended by one week. Early voting is now June 20 - July 4th (except Sunday June 21st and Sunday June 28th). Early voting WILL occur on July 3rd and 4th. Early voting locations can be found here. ALERT: Due to COVID-19 (coronavirus), early voting for the Saturday, August 15th General Election has been extended by one week. Maine

ALERT: Due to COVID-19 (coronavirus) the June 9, 2020 Primary election has been moved to Tuesday, July 14, 2020. In-person voting on Election Day will continue (if you vote in person be sure to follow safety guidelines from the CDC), however, all voters are strongly encouraged to request and vote an absentee ballot. You can request an absentee ballot at any time including Election Day, and no excuse is required to vote absentee. If you have any other questions please contact your Secretary of State.


Maryland

ALERT: Due to COVID-19 (coronavirus), the Presidential Primary election has been moved to June 2nd, 2020, and will take place mostly by mail ballots. Ballots will be mailed to all registered voters, you must be registered by May 27th in order to automatically receive your ballot. There will be limited in-person voting on June 2nd. If you have any questions about any of these changes please contact your Board of Elections.


Massachusetts

ALERT: Due to COVID-19 (coronavirus), several local elections have been postponed. To determine if your local election date has changed, please check the Election Dates information here or contact your local elections official.

ALERT: Due to COVID-19 (Coronavirus), all voters may vote absentee without meeting the below criteria for any elections that occur between now and June 30th. All voters are encouraged to apply for, and vote absentee.

ALERT: Due to COVID-19 (coronavirus) all registered voters in Massachusetts may vote by mail in any 2020 election, no excuse required. A vote by mail application will be mailed to every voter who is registered in September for the November General Election. You must return the vote by mail application by 4 business days before the election, though you are strongly encouraged to return your application as soon as possible to ensure you receive your mail ballot. For more information, contact your Secretary of the Commonwealth.


Michigan

ALERT: Due to COVID-19 (coronavirus), the Michigan Governor encourages all voters to vote absentee for the upcoming May 5th election. Local jurisdictions will be mailing absentee ballot applications to every registered voter, and will provide absentee ballots directly to new registrants. To ensure you get your absentee ballot application, please register to vote by April 20th. After April 20th, you may still register at your county clerks office, however you should call the clerk ahead of time to ensure they are open. On Election Day, there will be at least one polling location open if you wish to vote in-person, however, it is strongly encouraged you vote absentee. ALERT: Due to COVID-19 (coronavirus) all registered voters will be mailed an absentee ballot application for the November elections. All voters are encouraged to fill out those applications and return to the appropriate official in order to vote by mail for these elections. All registered voters in Michigan have the right to vote by mail.


Minnesota

ALERT: Due to COVID-19, all registered voters are encouraged to vote absentee for the August 11th primary election. Absentee ballots will NOT need a witnesses signature in order to be counted, if you do not have someone who can witness your ballot your vote will still count. Be sure to send in the absentee ballot on time (it must be POSTMARKED by Election Day). If you have any questions, please contact your local election officials.


Mississippi

ALERT: Due to COVID-19 (coronavirus) the criteria for requesting an absentee ballot has been updated to include a temporary or permanent physical disability, which may include but is not limited to a physician imposed quarantine due to COVID-19. Or, if someone is caring for a dependent that is under a physician imposed quarantine due to COVID-19. If you meet this new criteria, or any of the other criteria listed below, you can request your absentee ballot today or no later than 5 days before Election Day. Just be sure to return your voted ballot by the deadline (received by the Absentee Election Manager by 5pm the day before the election) to make sure your ballot is counted. Missouri

ALERT: Due to COVID-19 (coronavirus) the Tuesday, April 7, 2020 Municipal elections have been moved to Tuesday, June 2nd. The deadline to request an absentee ballot has been extended until May 20th. If you have any questions, please contact your Secretary of State.

ALERT: Due to COVID-19 (coronavirus) all Missouri voters may vote by mail for the November 3rd elections. All voters may vote absentee with a notarization of the ballot envelope, and voters in at-risk categories for contracting or transmitting COVID-19 are eligible to vote absentee by mail WITHOUT getting the envelope notarized. Montana

ALERT: Due to COVID-19 (coronavirus) the June 2nd primary will be held through mail ballots only. Ballots will automatically be mailed to all registered voters on May 8th. You can mail your ballot back (postage is prepaid) or drop the ballot at your county election office. All ballots must be received by 8pm on June 2nd in order to count. Some counties will continue to have Election Day voting at their traditional polling locations. Nebraska

Alert: Due to COVID-19 (coronavirus) in-person early voting for the May 12th election has been canceled. All voters are encouraged to request an early vote by mail ballot so they may vote absentee. The deadline to request a vote by mail ballot is May 1st. Be sure to request the ballot early to ensure it arrives before Election Day. All early vote by mail ballots must be received by 8pm on Election Day. If you have any other questions please contact your Secretary of State.


Nevada

ALERT: Due to COVID-19 (coronavirus), the Tuesday, June 9th Primary election will be an all-mail election. All registered voters will be mailed an absentee ballot automatically. You may mark your ballot and return using the pre-paid postage or dropping it off in person at designated county locations. All voters are encouraged to register to vote as soon as possible to allow for the absentee ballots to be mailed. On Election Day, at least one in-person polling location will be available in each county. Voters may register in person on Election Day or receive help if needed. If you have any questions, please contact your Secretary of State.

New Hampshire

ALERT: Due to COVID-19 (coronavirus) there have been changes to the absentee voting criteria for New Hampshire voters. Voters who either have COVID-19, are caring for someone who has COVID-19, or believe that voting in person will expose them to COVID-19 can apply for, and receive an absentee ballot. To receive your absentee ballot you must sign the "disability" affidavit on the application. Voters are encouraged to apply for their absentee ballot ASAP in order to receive it in advance of the September election. All absentee ballots must be received by 5pm on Election Day to be counted. You may also request an absentee voter registration package to register to vote. All voters can use the physical disability option to register to vote by mail. New Jersey

ALERT: Due to COVID-19 (coronavirus), local elections scheduled before May 12th have been postponed until Tuesday, May 12th. All May 12th elections will be held as vote-by-mail elections. To ensure you receive your ballot, please make sure you are registered to vote. The June 2nd Primary has been postponed to July 7th. Please contact your Secretary of State for more information.

ALERT: Due to COVID-19 (coronavirus), the June 2nd Primary has been postponed to July 7th. All active registered Republican and Democratic voters will automatically receive a vote-by-mail ballot. A pre-paid postage return envelope will be included. All unaffiliated voters and inactive Republican and Democratic voters will receive a postage-paid vote-by-mail application. To the extent possible, there will be at least 5 readily accessible secure ballot drop box locations per county for voters to return their vote-by-mail ballots. Vote-by-mail ballots returned by mail must be postmarked by July 7 (Election Day) and must be received by the County Board of Elections by July 14. Ballots returned in-person must be received by 8 pm, July 7 (Election Day). In-person voting options will also be available. A minimum of 1 polling location per municipality will be available and each county will open a minimum of 50% of its polling places (provided that sufficient poll workers are available). You can find your polling place here - be sure to check before heading out as many polling locations have changed. CDC guidelines for polling place safety and sanitation will be followed. Voters who vote at polling places will vote using a paper provisional ballot. Voters with disabilities may vote on ADA-accessible voting machines. Voters will not receive sample ballots but will receive notification of their polling locations. Voters cannot return voted vote-by-mail ballots to polling places. 


New Mexico

ALERT: Due to COVID-19 (coronavirus), all registered NM voters will be mailed an application for an absentee ballot. Voters are urged to register to vote, update their registration and/or request an absentee ballot on the Secretary of State's website. Absentee ballots will begin to be mailed on May 5th and the last day the Clerk can mail is May 29th. Absentee ballots must be received by mail, or hand-delivered to the Clerk's Office or Voting Center by 7pm on Election Day. In-person polling locations will be open on Election Day, however, it is recommended you check with your County Clerk before voting in-person to see if any polling locations have changed. New York

ALERT: Due to COVID-19 (coronavirus) the Presidential Primary has been moved to June 23, at the same time as the State Primary. Early Voting will begin on June 13th and end June 21st.  All New York voters will be able to vote absentee in the upcoming June 23rd election, and all voters will be mailed a absentee ballot application. Or you can fill out the absentee ballot application as soon as possible to ensure you receive their ballot. All absentee ballots must be postmarked by June 22 in order to be counted. Local elections have been rescheduled as well - all village and town elections previously scheduled for March, April, May or June will now be held on September 15, 2020. All school board/budget elections will be held on June 9, 2020, however, the election is all by mail. Each district will send a postcard with additional information, but if you have any questions, please contact your Board of Elections.


Ohio

ALERT: Due to COVID-19 (coronavirus), voting for the March 17th primary election has been extended through April 28th. If you have yet to return your absentee ballot, it must be postmarked by Monday, April 27. Or you can return it in person on Tuesday, April 28 by delivering it to your county board of elections by 7:30pm. Certain groups may also vote in-person at your county board of elections office on Tuesday, April 28th, including voters who requested an absentee ballot but did not receive one in time. The deadline to request an absentee ballot has passed.


Pennsylvania

ALERT: Due to COVID-19 (coronavirus) the Primary election date has been moved to Tuesday, June 2nd. All voters are encouraged to register to vote by mail as soon as possible to ensure a mail ballot is delivered. In person polling locations will still be open, however, they may be changed, so please check with your local Board of Elections before heading to the polls. The curfew for Philadelphia and Pittsburgh begins on June 2nd at 8:30pm. Polls are scheduled to close at 8pm.


Rhode Island

ALERT: Due to COVID-19 (coronavirus) the Tuesday, April 28th election has been moved to Tuesday, June 2nd. If you have any questions please contact your Board of Elections.

ALERT: Due to COVID-19 (coronavirus), the June 2nd Presidential Primary will be held mostly by mail. All mail ballots must be received by the State Board of Elections by 8pm on Election Day in order to be counted. There will be limited in person voting - make sure you check the list of updated polling locations to find your polling place. Please note, there are reduced polling sites so you may not vote in your normal polling location. For any additional questions, please contact your Board of Elections.


South Carolina

ALERT: Due to COVID-19 (coronavirus) all April and May municipal elections have been postponed. No new election date has been announced, so check back often for additional information. If you have specific questions please contact your County Board of Elections.

ALERT: Due to COVID-19 (coronavirus) all registered voters in South Carolina are able to vote absentee for the June Primary election. Voters can choose Reason 18 on the absentee ballot application and are qualified to vote absentee. Voters are urged to apply for their absentee ballot as soon as possible in order to receive it before Election Day (June 9th). If you have any questions, please contact scvotes.org.

Texas

ALERT: Due to COVID-19 (coronavirus), all May 2nd local elections have been moved to November 3rd. If you have any questions please contact your Secretary of State.


Virginia

ALERT: Due to COVID-19 (coronavirus), the June 9th Primary election has been moved to June 23. All voters are encouraged to vote mail ballots. Virginia law requires a reason to vote absentee, however, state officials have determined that COVID-19 is a valid reason for everyone to vote absentee, even if they are not ill. All voters are encouraged to apply online for their absentee ballot and to use reason 2A on the form (2A covers disability or illness and does not require documentation). The deadline to apply for an absentee ballot for the June 23 election is June 16. Voters mailing absentee ballots for the June 23rd primary do NOT need a witness. For now, the witness requirement still applies to all other elections.

West Virginia

ALERT: Due to COVID-19 (coronavirus), all registered voters in West Virginia will soon receive my mail an application for absentee voting. All voters are strongly encouraged to fill out and return this application so they can receive an absentee ballot and vote from home for the upcoming June 9th election. Absentee applications must be received on or before June 3rd in order to be accepted. If you still prefer to vote in-person, early voting is still scheduled for May 27th-June 6th, however, in order to reduce crowds all voters are encouraged to apply to vote absentee. Wisconsin

ALERT - Today is Election Day! Due to COVID-19 (coronavirus) there may be changes to your assigned polling location. To find your polling place, please contact the Elections Commission. If you have an absentee ballot, it must be hand delivered by TODAY at 8pm, or postmarked by TODAY in order to be counted. If you requested an absentee ballot but have not yet received one you may still go to your polling place and vote in-person (be sure to follow CDC safety recommendations). Wyoming

ALERT: Due to COVID-19 (coronavirus), all in-person voting for the April 4, 2020 has been canceled. All voting will take place through mail ballots. To receive a mail ballot you must have registered by March 10th, however, you may pick up and vote a ballot on March 28th at any of the early voting locations. All ballots must be postmarked by March 20th. You may return your ballot at a drop box either on March 28th or April 4th. You can find your ballot drop box location here.
